The Arco della Costa in Verona: the mysterious hanging rib

· SP International

Why does a bone hang from Verona's Arco della Costa?

In the historic centre of Verona, the Arco della Costa links the buildings around Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori. The passage connects the Palazzo della Ragione with the Domus Nova. Traditionally it allowed magistrates to travel between their residence and the city court without crossing the crowded streets, where they might be approached by people hoping to influence a decision.

Whale rib, ancient fossil or a devil's relic?

Suspended beneath the arch is an unusual long bone. Its precise origin has never been fully established, and various stories surround it. One hypothesis calls it an ancient marine-reptile fossil found in the Lessini Mountains. Another connects it to the devil or to a relic supposedly brought back from the Battle of Lepanto. These colourful explanations belong to Verona's popular traditions, not established fact.

The more widely accepted explanation is that it is a whale rib, once displayed by a nearby apothecary as a sign advertising the shop. Substances made from whale bone were historically used in medicines. The bone may have been placed there between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, although its chronology is debated.

The legend of the honest passer-by

According to local folklore, the hanging rib will fall only when a completely honest, pure-hearted person walks underneath it. Of course, no visitor should put the legend to the test by touching the object. The story remains part of what makes this corner of Verona memorable.

If you are exploring the city, take time to notice how its architecture, historic trade and local legends meet in a single landmark. For motorcycle enthusiasts, browse the MM Independent jet helmets inspired by Italian cities and regions.
